Ritual Sound is the first release from California-based Musician/DJ/Producer Serge Bandura under the moniker “Earthtones” (previous projects released under the name Sahaja).

This series of music was inspired by travels and meetings with the Hill Tribes peoples of Northern Vietnam, specifically the Red Dzao, Black Hmong and Flower Hmong. The recordings merge lo-fi analog drum machines + synthesizers with live percussion and samples of field recordings from the same region.

This EP is a benefit project, all proceeds from these recordings will be donated to support children from the local Indigenous populations who inspired the record (sapachildrenscharity.com).

Bac Ha is the most easily relatable track, while Ta-Mé (homage to an 80-yr old Red Dzao female elder) evokes more mystery and complexity. There are a variety of sonics in this short EP.

Story:
After traveling by motorcycle through the mountains of South Asia and spending time with peoples of various nations known as “The Hill Tribes,” Serge Bandura (Earthtones) returned to Los Angeles with a desire to express the power of these experiences. Without the words to properly communicate, he began to translate his experiences into music. Exploring his record collection for ideas he came across an LP of field recordings received in a trade from Carlos Niño, which captured traditional music from many of the same peoples he had encountered. This began a process of weaving these samples together with electronics and percussive elements to produce new pieces of music.
